We like to eat. We like restaurants: the farm-to-table kind, the Southern institution kind, the drive-in kind, the drive-to-the-middle-of-nowhere kind. From white tablecloths to neighborhood joints, all across the Upstate, good food is made here. Every issue, we’ll be bringing you quick tableside shots of the plates we never want to see fall off the menu.

1 Duck Wings

Kannika’s is a super-authentic Thai addition to the great array of Asian restaurants we’ve got going on in the Upstate, and the sticky, spicy, sweet duck wing appetizer is a standout. Perfect gateway to one of their curries.

2 Empanadas

Empanadas are made all over South America, and filled with just about anything you can think of. The folks at Tirado’s have been bringing their versions to the Upstate, first in Spartanburg and now in Greenville, for a good long while now. Try the spicy, savory Cheesy Beef, classic Jamony Queso, and the funky fusion Cheese and Pepperoni.

3 Street Tacos

There’re tacos, and there are street tacos, and Las Meras Tortas offers the classic: fresh corn tortillas (doubled), cilantro, onions, and meat of your choice. We love the slow roasted pork carnitas, and al pastor, where the pork is cooked with pineapple.

4 Kimchi

This classic Korean fermented wonderdish is alive and well all over the menu at Korean BBQ, a little spot tucked away in a strip of Woodruff Road. Try the Kimchi fried rice, topped with a fried egg, or the Kimchee pancake, full of salty, spicky, pickled goodness.
